1942 in Rawlins

On the back lawn in Rawlins.
Marie took the upper picture of Lois, Claudine with the twins in front. Below, Marie is in there with them on the left. Is that Geraldine in there? Lois has a different dress on now - or is that her? Someone was busy making all the matching dresses, I would guess it was their mom.

Lois' mother in her dress and apron getting set for some sort of race - this was before her back problems. Is that Claudine Reed second from the right and Lois fifth from the right? I wonder if it was a family reunion? With all the hair in bobby pins, I would guess this was on a Sat. afternoon.

Above and below: Marcie in the summer of 1942.
Good view of the up and coming neighborhood. They're in the new house- grass even! But if I remember right they had their first Sunday dinner there on the Sunday Pearl Harbor was bombed - Dec. 7, 1941. So they had all ready been in the house one summer.

Rawlins abt. 1940?

"Our Gang"
The twins are 4th and 5th from the left. Lois is on the far right. Anyone know the others? There are no names on this photo - but it sure is Rawlins isn't it?!! Talk about making the desert bloom as a rose....
She has pictures of a girl named Deta, who may be the one next to her.

1941 - A trip back to Utah to show off the new baby

l-r: Ward Reed, Harold Huggins, Glenda Huggins.

Lois and Junior Haehle, the neighbor's child (we believe). His sister, Leona, was a friend.

Glenda and baby Marcia/Marcie Huggins.
Marcia was born in 1941 in Rawlins, so this must be on a summer trip back to Salt Lake.

Cousin, Claudine Reed who was close to Lois' age.
There are many pictures of Claudine through the years in Lois' album.

The eve of the Rawlins move...

Lois about the time of moving to Rawlins. Labelled, "Me"
Top l-r: Emerson Ward, Irving School. Bottom l-r: Bryan Ward, Emerson School.
After growing up with large trees, sidewalks, and nice buildings like these, Rawlins was probably a culture shock. Perhaps Lois took these photos to remember the Utah chapter of her life.
July 23, 1939: Harold Huggins and Joan Thompson.

Black Photograph Album 1939-1942

While packing things up last winter, we came across this delightful little album which Grandma/Lois kept as a young teenager. It gives us a glimpse into a happy little girl's life and the hopes and dreams which are part of every young person's experience.

Lois was very careful to caption each picture with a white pencil on the black pages.
The album begins in Utah and covers the move to Rawlins, Wyoming. The majority of the photos are of her sisters, brother, extended family and friends.

These are pictures from the first 4 pages. We'll scan our way through the whole album over the next few weeks.

Betty, Marie, Leona Haehle (neighbor) and Glenda.
[developed May 20 1939]

Geraldine, Glenda and Harold in Haehle's back yard.

Grandma Crane - 1939

Sunday School Class of Bryon Ward - 1940
Lois identified on back of photo. Kathy thinks she's the girl with the white hat on the second row. Mike thinks she's the girl on the far left of the front row. They both look close enough to be at least sisters or cousins. What's your opinion? Weigh in with a comment!

A Day at the Beach

Dale said this beach party did not have a happy ending because they all ended up with bad sunburns. He was so sick the day after that he didn't report in to work- a bad thing to do in the military obviously.

Dale in his whites

Dale in a line for something. He doesn't remember the particulars, but it gives a good idea of dress at the end of WWII.
